The Salvation Army at the Helm of Wildfire Relief
Wild fire season has begun in Southern California and The Salvation Army is here to help.
The wind-drive Crown Fire is fully contained, 14,000 acres in North Los Angeles' Leona Valley desert community has been consumed. Over 1,300 firefighters battled the blaze in high temperatures and gusty winds. 2,000 households had been ordered to evacuate. The Salvation Army Disaster Relief Team was on hand, working hard to provide meals and emotional support to evacuees and disaster relief workers.
Thankfully, all evacuation orders have been lifted and people have returned to their homes. Although we remain thankful to the firefighters for so effectively containing the blaze, The Salvation Army remains on stand-by, readying our teams and supplies for Southern California's yearly fire season.
The Salvation Army Disaster Relief Services team is committed to providing warm meals, comfort, and assistance to all those affected by the blaze. With compassionate support from friends like you The Salvation Army can continue to provide necessary care for disaster survivors. Please Make a Gift today.
The Salvation Army Band has participated in the Tournament of Roses parade for over 90 years. Each year a marching song is chosen to be played by the band. For the past 10 years this song has been the same. This year The Salvation Army Music Ministries Department decided to do things a little bit differently. The first ever Tournament of Roses Composition Competition was underway and now the public gets to vote for their favorite song to be played on January 1st! More
To a great percentage of the global population, rice and beans are the staple of existence. These "survival foods" are inexpensive, filling, full of protein and fiber, and represent a main form of nurishment. The same holds true here in our own backyard. Even in a mostly upscale community like Glendale, California, one doesn't need to look far to find the working poor seeking the services of its local Salvation Army Corps for help to put food on the table. Los Angeles has long been considered the homelessness capital of America- a problem only acerbated when local veterans fall into homelessness themselves after returning from overseas. This August, in response to this serious problem, The Salvation Army's Bell Shelter- the largest homeless shelter of its kind in the Western U.S.- cut the ribbon on a new tranisitional home, representing the last step out of homelessness.
