Released 30 August 2009
In the early hours of Sunday morning, Salvation Army Envoy Carlos Souza and members of the Lancaster Corps and Community Center arrived at a Highland High School evacuation center in Palmdale to bring coffee and water to evacuees.
Thanks in part to donations from a local Ralphs Market and McDonalds, Salvation Army staff and volunteers provided a healthy breakfast of eggs, pancakes, fruit and oatmeal to more than 150 evacuees of the Station Fire at Crescenta Valley High School. Lunch will be provided by another agency; but The Salvation Army is on stand-by at this location for dinner.
The Salvation Army is providing support services for evacuee population at La Canada High School, and is serving meals to the approximate 60 evacuees at Highland High School in Palmdale. That number could increase if the status of the fire changes for the worst. The Salvation Army is also providing meals to approximately 20 evacuees and staff at Tujunga's Verdugo Hills High School shelter; and is on stand-by and will help as needed at the shelter established in Santa Clarita.
Salvation Army disaster services staff are in constant contact with first responders as well as with Red Cross case management personnel in preparation for assisting residents of the homes destroyed in the Big Tujunga Canyon area yesterday.
