Salvation Army Opens Pilot Project, Provides Treatment for Chronic Public Inebriates

The Salvation Army Clitheroe Center recently celebrated the grand opening of its new Specialized Treatment Unit (STU), with Mayor Dan Sullivan, Senator Johnny Ellis, Representative Mike Kelly and other supporters.

The STU, a pilot project, is the first of its kind in Alaska paving the way for adult chronic public inebriates to be involuntarily committed in order to receive detox and treatment services under Title 47 regulations. While Title 47 is a tool used to bring the individual into the program, it is not intended to be punitive. Robert Heffle, director of the Cltiheroe Center, says "At the forefront of my mind, and what I ask my staff to remember is that if this was my loved one, wouldn't I want a safe place for them to receive help?"

While recent headlines about individuals dying on the streets of Anchorage as a result of alcohol abuse have brought the issue of chronic inebriates to prominence, Senator Johnny Ellis initiated dialog about the need to address this issue more than two years ago. Estimates indicate there are approximately 400 chronic public inebriates in Anchorage, but 10% of the individuals account for about 90% of the costs associated with public inebriation.

Salvation Army Responds to Samoan Earthquake

The Salvation Army is currently coordinating response efforts following Tuesday’s major earthquake off the coast of the Samoan Islands. Communication and transport to the region remain extremely difficult, but response teams are already coordinating with government officials and others to provide support to tsunami survivors. Specific efforts include:

• An emergency response team from The Salvation Army New Zealand Territory is at the Auckland International Airport providing support for people being evacuated from Samoa. This assistance is being undertaken in conjunction with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and involves counseling, material support and accommodation.

• An assessment team from The Salvation Army World Service Office (SAWSO) is travelling to Samoa and American Samoa as soon as transport is available. The team will evaluate the ongoing level of support required by the government and impacted communities.

• After the assessment and identification report is received, The Salvation Army is planning to send a disaster recovery team to work with the Samoan Government and communities in meeting identified need. The Salvation Army has Samoan speaking personnel with a range of disaster recovery skills.

“All indications are that the impact of this disaster on these small island nations will be considerable – our recovery efforts will need to be significant to meet this need,” said SAWSO Executive Director, Lt. Colonel Dan Starrett. “We are calling on people around the world to pray for the survivors and, if possible, dig deep to support response efforts.”

S.O.S - HELP STOCK OUR SHELVES

The Salvation Army Family Emergency Services program assists individuals and families in our community by providing practical assistance to help bridge the gap during a crisis. But right now, the program is facing a crisis of its own. This summer, with the number of individuals needing our help on the rise, the shelves in our food pantry are almost bare, except for green beans, peas, canned salmon and potato chips. Not much to provide a hungry family, is it?

Last month almost 1,700 people in Anchorage came seeking help, so we're asking for your support to help to Stock Our Shelves. Food items needed include:

Canned fruit,

Soup, chili, stew and other canned meals

Box dinners, like macaroni & cheese, Hamburger Helper or Tuna Helper

Canned tuna, salmon, turkey or chicken

Peanut butter

Breakfast items like instant oatmeal or boxes of cereal

Donations can be dropped off at The Salvation Army Family Enrichment Center, located at 1712 A Street. For questions or more information, call 277-2593.
