Music Concert Showcases Local Talent
Wasilla, AK- They may not quite be ready for American Idol auditions, but after a week at camp, and hours of practice, 50 campers attending The Salvation Army King’s Lake Music & Creative Ministries Camp are eager to show off their musical abilities in front of family, friends and the community at their final concert on Saturday. The concert, which starts at 10:30 AM, will be held at King’s Lake Camp at 3313 Lakeview Road. During the concert outstanding students from each performance group will be recognized, with special trophies awarded to the top Junior and Senior musicians, based on their performance during Camp Soloist Night held earlier this week.
The Salvation Army is historically known for its brass bands playing around the Red Kettles during the holiday season. However, music is much more than a seasonal activity. Every summer The Salvation Army hosts a week-long music camp at King’s Lake Camp to instill a love for music in young people. Many of the campers may have never played an instrument before attending camp. Other students have several years of experience. Music Camp offers campers the opportunity to develop skills while attending band, vocal, guitar, timbrels and creative ministries classes.
The Salvation Army King’s Lake Camp offers summer camp programs to provide young people with an opportunity to experience a fun-filled week in the great outdoors. This year children from communities in Southeast Alaska, including Haines, Petersburg, Juneau, Ketchikan and Wrangell, were able to attend camp thanks to generous support from Wal-Mart that helped to provide scholarships and cover transportation costs.
