Break The Cycle

Help The Salvation Army break the cycle of child abuse in Alaska.Alaska continues to experience some of our nation’s highest (per capita) rates of child abuse and neglect. In many instances the abuse or neglect is closely connected to adults who are intoxicated or abusing substances. Together these two tragic situations bring countless Alaskans through the doors of Salvation Army programs in Alaska.

Beginning Monday, May 21, The Salvation Army is partnering with KTVA in their continuing Break the Cycle series. Tune in at 5 and 10 pm each night this week to learn how these programs play a vital role in helping break the cycle of child abuse in Alaska.

In conjunction with the daily news stories, we invite you to participate in our Baby Blessing gift drive. Donations of new baby items are greatly needed. Donations can be dropped off at The Salvation Army Alaska Divisional Headquarters located at 143 E. 9th Avenue.

Spring Collection Drive

Donate your gently used goods to your neighborhood Salvation Army Thrift Store.Driving around Anchorage this past weekend its evident that spring has really arrived. The grass is greening, the trees have leaves and the days are noticeably longer.

Spring also is a time for cleaning up around the house. As you’re cleaning out closets and garages, remember The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Program needs your gently used household items to continue our life-changing ministry for men in our community.

The next four Saturdays, you’ll see our Red Shield trucks at several neighborhood Carrs-Safeway stores to accept your gently used household items.

May 26 - Huffman Carrs
June 2 - Aurora Village Carrs
June 9 - Jewel Lake Carrs
June 16 - Eagle River Carrs

More than 300 frail, homebound seniors are enrolled in The Salvation Army Meals on Wheels program and receive a hot meal each day. According to Susan Faith, director of the Older Alaskans Program, "the program plays a vital role in providing a safety net for our seniors and helps them live independently."

A Bargain Hunter

Looking for a yard sale?Sam loves to hunt for bargains. Growing up during the Great Depression, he learned the value of every penny. There were many times when his family had nothing to eat except cornbread and pinto beans.

"Growing up in those days made me appreciate every penny I had," he said.

His penchant for penny-pinching has served him well. By carefully watching his money, Sam has set aside a nice nest egg for retirement.

Sam has been a loyal, annual supporter for many years and plans to continue making gifts as long as possible. On our web site, he read about charitable gift annuities and especially liked learning that a gift annuity offers both income and tax benefits.

With the recent death of his wife, he's reflected on what more he can do for our organization.

"Planning for the future is very important," Sam said.

Our gift planning officer followed up on his inquiry and recently presented a proposal for a gift annuity.

Sam told the gift planner that he liked the concept of a gift annuity: He would make a gift to our organization and receive fixed income for life. After he passes away, the annuity would become available for our organization's work. Sam's only concern was that he didn't need the income right now.
