The Salvation Army Prepares for Cold Weather with Winter Night Shelters for the Homeless!

(Portland, OR) - As the cold weather approaches, The Salvation Army is already preparing for the increase in number of men and women on the streets needing night shelter from the weather. The Harbor Light Center and Salvation Army Female Emergency Shelter (SAFES), both located in downtown Portland, will be expanding their services beginning the first of November with additional beds in each facility.

Harbor Light, located at 30 SW 2nd St., will be open from 8pm-8am starting November 1st for homeless men to find shelter. The Center is working with the City and will serve 70 men a night with 35 slots reserved for those deemed medially vulnerable. Case management will be available. A Tuberculosis card is required to use the shelter. The night shelter will close the morning of April 1, 2010.

SAFES will be adding 15 spots to their current 50-bed night shelter at 11 NW 5th Ave. in downtown Portland. The winter night shelter will start October 30th and close March 31, 2010. The shelter will be open from 6pm-7am. All night services will remain the same for those women in the shelter, including access to showers, case management and rental assistance.

Both shelters will continue to run their day shelters throughout the winter months.
