Why:
| The Salvation Army provides close to a thousand individuals every year the opportunity to learn music in the Portland Metro area. Music is an integral aspect of its ministry and has been known for its brass bands for over a century. These programs provide services that schools are cutting or reducing, making it hard for kids to learn these skills. The problem is the lack of instruments for every person, the quality of instruments, and funds. Take an insider’s look at the difference music makes in the lives of people and see why it is important to help support the music programs at the “Fill The Drum” Benefit Concert this Friday, featuring an iconic Salvation Army Brass Band. There is no band like this for hundreds of miles.

The Salvation Army has been known for its brass bands for over a century and has seen music as an integral aspect of its ministry. In Portland, The Salvation Army operates 4 Corps (churches) where music programs are offered. This has become an even greater need as more and more schools are reducing, closing, or have closed their music programs.
“Fill The Drum” is a concert designed to keep these programs available to the community. Attendees are encouraged to come fill the drum with instruments and financial contributions. Breathe life into old instruments by putting them into the hands of a curious child yearning to learn a new skill and help fill their life with music.
The Salvation Army in Portland is excited to welcome such extraordinary musicians to the Metro area and to continue the Salvation Army tradition of brass music.
The Salvation Army Territorial Staff Brass Band has played internationally and is made up of some of the best Salvation Army brass musicians from across The Salvation Army’s Western Territory; it is considered an honor to be invited to play with this accomplished group of musicians. The band only meets a couple times a year, and each time they meet, they put on a concert as a service project. The “Fill The Drum” concert in Portland this year is one of these service projects.
