Mayor Kevin Johnson held a press conference in the warehouse of The Salvation Army on North B Street in Sacramento.

Mayor Johnson, The Salvation Army and Hands On Sacramento were celebrating the success of their initiative to generate 500,000 volunteer hours by the end of the year.
The initiative, called Volunteer Sacramento, has already surpassed its goal and produced 689,000 hours, the mayor happily announced.
The Salvation Army contributed in a major way to this initiative with almost 200 volunteers performing over 7,000 hours of work since the beginning of the year. Some projects include the Kaboom playground project and "Food box packin' Tuesdays."
In addition to thanks from the mayor, Major Doug Riley, Del Oro Divisional Commander, also spoke and stressed the importance of service and the pivotal role The Salvation Army continues to play in creating a caring community that works to lift itself up through volunteerism.
