The Lighthouse Corps takes to the street 3 nights a week to bring food, clothing, and hygiene supplies to the homeless people living in the Tenderloin, Civic Center, Haight, and South of Market (SOMA) neighborhoods of San Francisco. The Homeless Outreach Program is carried out by the Corps Officer Envoy Roger McCort and the Corps Assistant Trey Hiller. Sandwiches, basic meat and cheese with condiment packets and a napkin wrapped up with them, are made on site at the Harbor Light Center by volunteers and then delivered during the evening Outreaches in these hard hit areas.
In 2011 the Corps saw over 1,100 volunteers donate 8,800 plus hours to deliver over 85,000 sandwiches and hot meals, 14,541 items of clothing, and 10,061 comfort kits and gifts to the chronically homeless of San Francisco. This may sound like a lot, and it is, but the real mission is one of humble compassion through human interaction. Each person we meet, as they are handed a sandwich and maybe a fresh pair of socks, is greeted respectfully and kindly; perhaps the only kindness they have seen in their whole day. It is the mission of the Outreach Program to bring dignity to the people we meet and in that way live up to the teachings of Jesus Christ in our lives.
