A "Sweet" Tradeoff: Cookies (and Smiles) for Canned Food
Eddie's Bakery Café teams up with The Salvation Army to nourish Central Valley families in need of food
November 4, 2009 - FRESNO, CA: Eddie's Bakery Café is partnering with The Salvation Army of Fresno to host a two-month long food drive with a "sweet" reward: Eddie's Bakery Café will give a complimentary smiley face cookie for every three non-perishable food items donated. Marc and Rachelle Wickliffe, owners of Eddie's Bakery Café, have appropriately dubbed the effort the "help put a smile on someone's face" food drive, which will benefit those families and individuals most affected by the high-unemployment rates and poor economic conditions.
"Eddie's Bakery Café works with the local Salvation Army on a regular basis, donating our pastries, breads and many leftover desserts at the end of each day," said Rachelle Wickliffe, co-owner of Eddie's Bakery Café. "We learned, through a Salvation Army volunteer, that the supply of non-perishable foods was very, very low, and we wanted to do something to help. What better way to reward generous donors than with a deliciously cute Smiley Face Sugar Cookie and help put smiles on the faces of both the canned food donor and families who will benefit from the food donation."
"The amount of hungry families has increased, but food donations to our pantry have remained the same," said Captain Dwaine Breazeale, Fresno County Coordinator for The Salvation Army. "The Salvation Army needs the community to step up to the challenge of helping local families during this holiday season. We are very fortunate to have Eddie's Bakery Café as a shining example in our effort to end hunger in the Central Valley."
The food drive, which kicks-off today, will continue through December 24. Donations should be non-perishable food, like canned soup, canned meats, canned vegetables or fruit, pasta, beans, rice or cereal. Cash and checks are also appreciated. Donated food items must be presented to an Eddie's staff member to receive free smiley face cookie. Eddie's Bakery Café is located at 7089 N. Cedar Avenue, at the northwest corner of Cedar & Herndon (next to John's Incredible Pizza). For more information, call (559) 323-0900.
