The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center of San Francisco will host its 1st  Anniversary Celebration on Friday, October 30, 2009 from 5 pm - 9 pm, including a Family Halloween Carnival and Open House.

The Anniversary Celebration is a family-oriented event, and admission is free to all children and their families.  It is anticipated that several hundred local children will attend, together with their parents, community leaders, and neighborhood residents.

Since the Kroc Center opened in September 2008, more than a thousand people have joined as members.  Members enjoy a range of fitness, educational, and after-school programs.  The Kroc Center currently serves 70 local children in its after-school program, and 55 senior citizens in its senior-meal program.  Membership fees are nominal, starting at $10 per month for children, and $20 for adults; and a limited number of scholarships are available that provide financial support toward payment of the membership fee.

"My analogy of this building --- we're an island in a sea of shark-infested water.  Kids and families can escape our of the area and come in here and you're in a different place," said Major George Rocheleau, the center's administrator.

The work of the Kroc Center is made possible largely through a gift of the late Joan Kroc, widow of McDonald's founder Ray Kroc, whose bequest will eventually support over thirty Kroc Centers in the United States. To mark the occasion, the Kroc Center is pleased to announce that Ronald McDonald is expected to be in attendance.  The Anniversary Celebration is intended to help raise awareness of the needs of the Tenderloin, and the community as a whole, and will include entertainment, a magic show, and photo opportunities.

The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center of San Francisco is a community-based organization which provides life-changing opportunities and facilities, such as fitness, education, and after-school programs, which aim to enrich the lives of children, adults, seniors, and families.
