Released 2 July 2007
The Salvation Army's mobile canteens fill an important need to feed the hungry, reaching out to the islands' homeless population. On Oahu, food bags and other basic necessities are distributed twice a week to many famiiles living on the Wai'anae Coast. On Kauai, more than 200 people, many of them children and elderly, are served hot meals at Hanamaulu Beach Park.
"The need is so great and the service is a must," says Captain Mitham Clement. "It is so gratifying to see that we are able to feed so many hungry children."
Homelessness is a growing problem in Hawaii. Recent estimates put the homeless as many as 8,000 living mostly on coastlines.
Although several groups have helped maintained the feeding program, there is still a great need for additional funding, food donations, paper goods, and community partnerships, according to Capt. Clement. To help, please call 808-245-2571.
