The Salvation Army Family Intervention Services (FIS) provides residential, prevention and intervention services to adolescents in communities on the Big Island of Hawai'i. Its mission is to provide youth with skills for a healthy lifestyle, and instill purpose, hope and vision to youth and their families. FIS provides opportunities to achieve academic success and personal resiliency.
FIS has five distinct programs, namely:
ALA KA'I NA OPIO (East Hawai'i)
PU'UHONUA NA OPIO (West Hawai'i)
(Emergency Shelter)
These two emergency shelter programs on the East and West sides of the Big Island provide a sanctuary to youth ages 12 to 17 for up to 90 days of residence. The youth learn life skills including cooking, positive communication skills, personal hygiene, and socialization skills. While in residence, the youth's behavior, school and academic performance are monitored. Transportation is provided to school, appointments and program activities within city limits.
HUI MAKA'ALA (Group Home)
This program provides a group home environment with long-term residential treatment for youth ages 12 to 19. With youth functioning as a family unit sharing in the upkeep of the household, each one is encouraged to modify his/her present situation and adequately cope with life challenges in a positive way. The program assists them in developing social skills, completing their high school GED, enhancing self-esteem, and for some, gaining self-sufficiency.
YOUTH SERVICE CENTERS (Prevention Programs)
Located in Hilo, Keeau, Pahoa, Honoka'a and Kealakehe, the Youth Service Centers assist youths ages 5 to 18 through in-school and after-school programs throughout the school year, including a summer program. The Centers offer educational development, mentoring, opportunities for community services, youth leadership, and positive alternative activities. Additional prevention programs include teenage pregnancy and family strengthening, tobacco prevention and METH prevention program.
NA HO'OLA PONO (Independent/Transitional Living Skills Program)
Na Ho'ola Pono is an independent living program that provides life skills services to youth ages 12 to 21. It teaches self-development, home management, nutrition, personal finance, literacy, social competency, educational support, as well as career and employment exploration and readiness. Youths participate in individual and group sessions where they learn pro-social skill development, post-secondary preparation and emploment.
KE KAMA PONO (Safe House for Girls)
This program is an eight-bed Safe House Group Home for girls ages 12 through 17. The goal is for the girls to learn decision making, independent living and social and life skills. The Home provides residential, recreational, peer-intensive, pro-social and cultural community-based services. There is also an on-site educational component. The Home also offers individual, group and family counseling to assist in developing positive peer, family and community relationships utilizing the cognitive behavioral approach.
