About Us

The Salvation Army Mission

The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its Mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and meet the human needs in his name without discrimination.

Santa Barbara Corps Mission Statement

Santa Barbara Corps is a Bible based community of faith, providing opportunities to accept and worship the Lord, empower spiritual and personal growth, develop strong relationships and serve individuals in need within our sphere of influence

Santa Barbara Corps Vision Statement
The Santa Barbara Corps will have culturally relevant inspiring worship using appropriate technology and music to build membership allowing for future church plating and/or alternative Worship Service in languages as required.

Within our Corps ministries all individuals will have the ongoing opportunity to hear and share the gospel and become active members.

All Corps members will be encouraged to participate in a small group/accountability group for Spiritual nurture, Prayer, Study and Fellowship. Training for leadership responsibilities, Gift oriented ministries, Christian education and Mission involvement will be provided through Corps programming.

The Corps will be self sufficient financially to provide for Corps operation maintenance and ministry, by obtaining ongoing funding sources and congregational giving. Strong local leadership will provide direction within the local context and encourage members to participate in ministries of service both local and distant lay and professional, to meet the holistic needs of individuals.

The Santa Barbara Corps’ History

The Santa Barbara Corp’s mission is to meet human need wherever it is found without discrimination through services that provide emergency and rehabilitation assistance, health care, youth development services, and community programs targeting families, youth, homeless individuals, seniors and families with HIV/AIDS. The Salvation Army provides service to all without regard to religious affiliation, sexual orientation, race, gender or other discrimination.

The Salvation Army was founded in England by Reverend William Booth in 1865, brought to the United States in1879, arriving in Los Angeles in 1884.

The Salvation Army has been in Santa Barbara since 1889. Services to the homeless began during the Great Depression and the Hospitality House, providing both food and shelter, opened its doors in downtown Santa Barbara to homeless men and women in the early 1960’s. The Corps relocated to its present site near the corner of Hollister and Turnpike in 1974, providing worship and family social services including a daycare program were established.

In 2004, The Salvation Army provided services to 2,000 unduplicated individuals; 400 received meals, shelter and other emergency financial assistance at Hospitality House or took part in our Jobs Club Program which enables individuals to move from homelessness to permanent housing; at the Corps Center over 1,500 received counseling, holiday meals and gifts and other emergency services while 50 children between 2 and 12 attend Kingdom Kids childcare and after-school programs (65% are considered low-income).

The Santa Barbara Corps partners with the Department of Veteran Affairs, the County Departments of Mental Health, Public Health and Social Services, Project Recovery, Cottage Healthcare Systems, Transition House, Bethel House, and the Casa Esperanza to provide emergency food and shelter assistance, and with the Department of Social Service and the Department of Education’s Child Development staff to provide quality preschool, kindergarten and after-school programs.

The Salvation Army’s work differs from other social service agencies because of the broad scope of its activities that provide emergency and rehabilitation assistance, youth development services, and community programs. The Salvation Army is committed to creating a safe, structured, supportive environment whether a person is trying to master the abc’s or rebuild self-confidence and employment skills.
