SAN DIEGO CHARGERS CELEBRATE 10th YEAR

FEEDING THE HOMELESS DOWNTOWN

Wide Receivers Kassim Osgood and Gary Banks, Coach Ron Rivera and his daughter, volunteers and members of The Salvation Army Metropolitan Advisory Board joined forces to feed the homeless downtown during National Salvation Army Week.

Every Thursday evening, San Diego Chargers, coaches and staff feed the homeless at the downtown Salvation Army.  They do it in season, out of season and without any of the fanfare usually surrounding celebrity appearances. It's something they have done for a decade, led by Player Outreach Director Dick Lewis and quietly funded by team owner Dean Spanos.

"They don't want any recognition, but once in a while, we just have to say, ‘THANK YOU' to the Chargers because of what their time, energy and generosity mean to those who live on the streets," says Divisional Secretary Major Mike Dickinson.

The Chargers bring teenage boys from the McAlister Center's rehabilitation program, mentoring them as they prepare, serve and clean up together.  Then, all form a fellowship circle under the stars, sharing their deeply personal journeys.  The evening is part of Dick Lewis' goal of helping teenage boys in trouble while keeping his players humble and real.
