Emergency Disaster Services
SATERN (Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network)
When traditional forms of communication are not functioning, SATERN radio operators assist in relaying important information between command posts.
 |
|
The purpose of the Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network (SATERN) is to train and acquire personnel skilled in emergency communications and message handling, who will support Salvation Army operations in local, regional and international disaster situations.
SATERN volunteers establish health-and-welfare nets, pass messages between field workers and their respective command posts, string up dipoles and operate from emergency generators. They also have been known to unload trucks of ice, deliver a motorized canteen to earthquake-ravished Kobe, check on the welfare of vulnerable elderly in a mega heat wave, and prepare sandwiches and hot coffee for firefighters battling an extra-alarm blaze in below-zero weather. In short, SATERN is not your ordinary radio club!

SATERN Members Install New Antennas at El Centro Corps
On 02/15/09, Imperial County ARES/RACES/SATERN hams erected new HF, VHF/UHF antennas on the El Centro Salvation Army Corps (SATERN station). The event was headed by XE2K Hector. N7TY Bruce, K6SWT Will, KB6DL Bill and his son, N6CRX Fransisco, and WB6CGJ Dennis helped with the project. All went well. However, we have some fine tuning to do. N7TY is upgrading the connectors and fuse wiring for a more professional look and reliable station. We will have a 1st class SATERN station when we are finished.

Amateur Radio Operators are Needed for San Diego SATERN!
Do you remember the Cedar Fire of October 2003 and more recently the Witch Creek and other fires of October 2007? How did those fires affect you and your neighbors and friends? Maybe you were even a victim of one or both of these huge fires.
Have you ever thought about becoming an Emergency Disaster Services volunteer? The Salvation Army needs your help in San Diego County. If you are a licensed Amateur Radio Operator, we need your special expertise by becoming a member of the Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network (SATERN). This would be a great way to serve your God, your Country and your local community. For more information please call Tom Carmody, KJ6TDC at 760-789-4883 and leave your name and number. If you contact him by e-mail at tomcarmody@cox.net make sure you have SATERN listed in the subject box. You will be contacted as soon as possible.
Please also view the National web site of www.satern.org for information about SATERN. You are also cordially invited to check in as a visitor on our San Diego County SATERN Nets. The two Nets are held every Thursday. At 2000 hours or 8:00 P.M. we are on the Palomar Repeater at 147.075 with a positive offset and a PL Tone of 107.2. At 2030 hours or 8:30 P.M. we move to Mission Hills repeater at 145.320 with a negative offset and a PL Tone of 107.2. We hope you can join us on one or both of the Thursday evening Nets.
