The Salvation Army Haven started in 1994 at the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Healthcare Center (VAHC) as an emergency housing program for veterans. The Haven caters to the needs of veterans, many of whom face a complex set of obstacles ? shortage of affordable housing, low wages, lack of access to healthcare, lingering effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, mental illness, substance abuse and a lack of family and social support networks.
The Haven ensures that homeless or at-risk veterans receive housing and support services in addition to the medical care offered by the VAHC. In order to cater to the spiritual needs of veterans Envoy Roy Snapp-Kolas, Executive Director of The Salvation Army Haven created The Haven Outpost.
The Haven Outpost currently meets at The Salvation Army Inglewood Corps Community Center and is dedicated to providing service to hurting men and women. The Haven Outpost is voluntary and is open to residents, graduates, their families, and anyone interested in developing a lifestyle of recovery from a Christian perspective. The Salvation Army, in keeping with its mission, implemented this spiritual segment of the program, which is funded and run solely by The Salvation Army.
