In Malibu Canyon, nestled amongst old oaks and evergreens lies The Salvation Army's Camp Mt. Crags and Camp Gilmore. These two summer camps offer youngsters, ages eight to sixteen, recreational and educational activities in a safe and enriching environment. Every year, more than 2,000 children, most from low-income families, get a chance to spend five days and nights at Camp Mt. Crags and Camp Gilmore appreciating the great outdoors.
The staff ensures that each camper is in a protected environment and receives direct supervision and special attention. All camp activities are supervised by trained, qualified and experienced staff, as mandated by the American Camping Association.
At The Salvation Army Camp Mt. Crags and Camp Gilmore, separate camp experiences are offered for different ages. Boys and girls between eight and thirteen can take part in ‘themed' camp weeks like sports camp and creative ministries camp - while older kids aged thirteen to sixteen can participate in outdoor wilderness camp. These different camping encounters allow the children to learn teamwork and cooperation while helping them forge lasting friendships.
Every June, The Salvation Army summer camps hold a 10K/5K Trail Run and Fitness Walk which directly funds ‘camper-ships' to send low-income children to summer camp. The cost of a week at camp is $330 per child. Since many of our target population can only afford to pay $25 or less, there is a great need to raise scholarship funds.
Sometimes all it takes to make a difference in a child's life is to give them the opportunity to see the world from a new perspective. A week at The Salvation Army's two residential summer camps offer just that. For the 2,000 kids that attend our summer camp program every summer, it is one week without worrying where their family is going to sleep or if there will be enough food to eat. By giving these inner-city kids the chance to be a kid, we are also giving them the chance to dream again.
During their week of respite, campers can participate in a variety of activities, including:
- Ropes Course
- Rock Climbing Wall
- Arts and Crafts
- Nature Study
- And much, much more!
