Christmas Comes Early to Tacoma
Dan and Teresa Donahue like to give back to their community, especially at Christmastime. For the past three years the Donahue family has taken part in The Salvation Army of Tacoma's "Adopt A Family" Program. This special program matches a needy family who is struggling to make ends meet, with a sponsor who wishes to provide a family in need with Christmas food and gifts. Usually Dan and Teresa purchase gifts like clothing items and toys for the children, but this year they were stunned when they saw the request from their adopted family. "We were saddened to find out that our family was in such great need that they were asking for air mattresses and bedding. They had spent the last six months living out of their car, and the entire family was sleeping on the floor, including the baby." Teresa called Major Dixie Dabis with a question, "We want to give them beds, but do we have to wait until Christmas?" The next day, Dan and their grandson Isaac showed up at The Salvation Army with a truckload of bedding items for the family, including a racecar bed, a crib and an air mattress. "No one should have to sleep without something comfortable" Dan exclaimed. "We like being able to give, and we are glad that we are in a position that we are able to help out." Major Dixie stated, "This absolutely warms my heart. The Donahue family went the extra step to help this family with a very important need. And they're still going to provide Christmas presents too!"
Last year, 32 families received assistance through the Adopt A Family Program. For more information on the Adopt A Family program or other Christmas opportunities contact Major Dixie Dabis at 253-572-8452 extension 103 or Constance Moravek at 253-572-8452 extension 112.
