 Storytime at The West

For more than 20 years, The Salvation Army West Women's and Children's Shelter (WWCS) has been serving homeless women and their children in the Portland area.  Unfortunately, many of these women and children who are survivors of domestic violence and find themselves at the shelter looking for help and for hope.  In 2009, The Salvation Army West Women's & Children's Shelter housed 179 women and children and took 3,459 crisis calls. 

On average, families at WWCS stay for 7 months and women without children stay for nearly 3 months.  The mission of The Salvation Army West Women's and Children's Shelter is to intervene in the lives of homeless and abused women and children, providing opportunities for self-sufficiency through shelter and support services.  This is a referral-only program.

  • Parenting skills training
  • Tutoring for GED completion
  • Networking with other service agencies
  • Individual guidance and support in a caring, home-like atmosphere

 For Children

  • Therapeutic preschool program in a nurturing environment
  • Individual developmental assessments
  • Age-appropriate activities and special outings
  • One-on-one sessions with a Licensed Professional Counselor
  • Portland Children's Intervention Project serving traumatized children throughout the entire domestic violence service system.
