Just down the street from The Salvation Army's Harbor Light Center is the Salvation Army Female Emergency Shelter, also known as SAFES. Very few people want to be living on the streets, in fact, the likelihood of a woman being sexually assaulted within the first 48 hours of living on the streets is 99%! This shelter provides a safe place for homeless women to turn to for food, shelter, a shower, guidance, and a friendly face. It is a community where those who were previously defined as "chronically homeless" are becoming self-sufficient and are obtaining permanent housing. In 2009, SAFES served 180 women in the shelter and helped 54 women move from the streets into permanent housing. The Day Service program served 285 women, providing them a place to receive help during the day.
