Ever since the time of William Booth, the founder of The Salvation Army, this has been a motto that Salvationists and supporters of The Salvation Army have taken to heart. By helping others, The Salvation Army believes that they by serving people in need, they are also serving God.
Over time, The Salvation Army has expanded its services to the people based on the needs of the population and the individual communities in which it is located. The surrounding areas are surveyed to find out what they may need most and The Salvation Army works to provide that. Oftentimes, many of these issues include homelessness, violence, education, after-school programs, food and utilities assistance. The Salvation Army in Portland provides all of this and more, continuing its work of serving those who are in the most need.
